Berty was employed
in the Department of Nature Conservation of the Faculty of Forestry at the
University of Stellenbosch from 1984 to 1999. His research fields focussed
on quantitative methods in conservation ecology and wildlife management. In
1996 he was president of the South African Statistical Association.
In the forestry
field he has been involved in growth and yield modelling for fuel wood and
charcoal production from savannah systems. Berty has been working in Forest
Certification and Auditing since 1989 first as a member of the team
developing audit standards for plantation forestry in South Africa, auditing
for Woodmark in Swaziland, Namibia & South Africa, developing national
standards in South Africa, Ghana & Chile, lecturing in certification
processes, criteria & indicators, & leading international training courses.
Berty has acted as
an advisor to both government and industry on issues of sustainable
forestry, certification, conservation and ecotourism. He has won research
contracts and awards from DWAF, WWF, De Beers and Mazda in the fields of
sustainable forestry and natural resource conservation.
As a consultant
with Horus Wildlife he advises on wildlife management & ecology, certified
forestry, harvest regulations in Savannah Woodlands, sustainable game
farming, evaluation & statistical analysis in wildlife management &
conservation, biodiversity assessments, and conflict resolution in natural
resource management.
Berty is author or
co-author of 28 refereed scientific publications and has made more than 150
conference presentations.
